Questions about UG/Master's

Why have you chosen this specific University?

Each University has its own speciality talk about it. Talk about their on-going research or famous contribution of that university. If you are confused about what to say talk about their courses and make sure you are well aware of the courses that the University is going to offer for that course.

Which Universities did you get accepted and what are your rejects?

+

Be honest and say about your rejects because the evaluation process of Universities changes from one to another and the VO is well aware of it.

What are all the Universities that you have applied?

+

Mention about the Universities which you have applied if you have applied for more than 5-6 universities talk only about few or the main one’s. If are sure that you can answer the question “Why have you applied for these many Universities?” you can go ahead and mention about all the Universities.

‍PS: The VO won’t have any information about the number of Universities that you have applied. 

What was your GRE TOEFL/ IELTS scores?

Be quick and precise answer your overall score if they ask for your sectional scores answer them 

Pro Tip: - It is safe and advisable to carry your score cards.

Why did give gave GRE / IELTS/ TOEFL twice or thrice (If given)

There are two ways to answer this question one is you can say that you are not satisfied with your score and you felt that you are capable of getting a better score.

Mention you targeted a particular University and their cut-off was high so you wanted to be on a safer side while applying to that University.

What was your undergraduate GPA/ Percentage?

Be quick while answering this question. If you haven’t received your final semester results mention your GPA till 7th semester and you are expecting that your results will be out soon.

From which college did you graduate or going to graduate?

+

This is a simple one you guys can answer this.

Why did you chose that particular branch in UG?

+

Talk about what made you chose that branch. Example: My interest in Automobiles made me choose Mechanical/ Automobile Engineering as my undergraduate branch.

What was your major/ final year project about?

+

Be prepared for this question have a well-structured answer about this question and answer it with confidence. Example: My final year project was based on electric vehicle in which I along with 3 other students have designed and fabricated an electric vehicle which runs on battery and a motor.

Can you justify about your low GPA or percentage (If you have)?

+

There is no definite answer for this question if you have many projects and extra-curricular activities you can mention them and say that you were focused more on getting practical knowledge rather than sitting in a classroom.

Where are you working currently and what is your job role?

+

Mention your role and your company’s name.

Why do you want to study again if you are already working?

+

This is a very tricky question you can tackle it by saying the knowledge you gained in your undergrad studies is limited and you started working to apply your theoretical knowledge and gain some practical knowledge, you wanted to learn more about the subject (Research in that area if you are going for a research based program) and expand your horizon.

What is your Master’s course about?

+

Say your course name and what the course is actually about.

Why don’t you do this course in India?

+

You can answer by saying that there are very limited Universities in India that offer that particular course and the Subjects that are taught in USA Universities are far more advanced and are almost up to date with the existing technologies and also the learning experience offered by US Schools is of very high value anywhere in the world. If you have any better answer than this go with your answer.

Questions about Sponsors

Who is going to sponsor your education?

Mention who is going to sponsor your education if it is your father/mother or anyone or if you have taken any loan.

What is your Father’s / Mother’s Occupation?

+

Talk about their occupation.

How much savings do your parents have?

+

Split the answer into two parts one is liquid assets: - Saving. Fixed assets: - farms, house, gold and fixed deposits etc. 

Have you taken loan? From where?

+

State the bank name and how much loan you have taken from the bank.

How are you going to manage your living expenses?

+

If your bank is giving loan including you living expenses state that or you can say your parents have xxx amount in savings and they are going to support you. If you are working and have savings you can mention them.

‍PS:  It is not advisable to say that you are going to work there part time and manage your living expenses as you would be taking jobs of native Americans.

Do you have any fixed assets?

+

 If you have any mention them.

If your sponsor is someone outside from India

Who is going to sponsor you and how are you related to them?

+

Be precise and mention if they are maternal relatives or paternal relatives or brothers or sisters.

What is their visa status in that particular country?

+

Answer it accordingly if they are in USA mention their visa status.

What is their job position/ role in that country?

+

Mention about their job title and how long they are working.

In which company are they working?

+

Mention their company name.

How and why did they immigrate to that country?

+

Give a very good reason make sure that you make VO feel that you are going to follow them and stay in US. Better ask your sponsor what was their reason of going to that particular country.

How much savings they have?

+

Ask your sponsor how much savings they have and ask them to send the bank statements.

If they are in US are you going to stay with them?

+

Its better to say that you are going to stay near the University and explore nearby places and stuff.

Questions about Future Plans

What are your future plans?

+

Prepare a good answer before hand if your parents have a business you can utilise it by saying you want to takeover their business and apply what you have learned during in your Master’s to the business. You can also state a big Indian company which is related to your field and you are very much interested in working in that company in India after your Master’s. You can also mention that you want to start a small scale industry and grow it and create more employment for your country’s people.

Will you return to your home country after finishing your Master’s?

+

“Yes” always make sure your answer is yes, they don’t encourage immigrants. Also give a solid reason supporting answer. If you are the only son/ daughter you can use it to your advantage stating as I am the only child, I want to return back and take care of my parents.

Are you going to use your CPT/ OPT?

+

To be on a safe side answer like this “I plan to utilize your CPT but right now I don't have any plans to utilize OPT at that moment”
